Mr. Yoweri Museveni is the President of Uganda from 26th of January1986.
Discovering this man, this I would say statesman, immense patriot with rooted wisdom was enlightening and absolutely good news. It has been spiced with his philosophy and a way he explains, connects and implements the concepts for the benefit of his country and people. Many can learn from this wise man! Particularly the Western countries as he said in 2007 that “The western countries do not listen carefully. They are full of themselves., they think they know everything, That’s why they make mistakes.” This did not change till today but it increased to the level of tragedy!
He is in favour of entrepreneurship and recently he defined how he sees that word while inviting some of the European businessman to go to Uganda- He said: ” Entrepreneurship is the capacity to have spectacles to see the opportunity” However, he continued “For many people spectacles are not working,” to conclude that he respects and likes the spirit of “good Eyesite!”
His concept is in complete balance with the name of this site Philosophyofgoodnews.
I will present you with some parts of his remarkable book “WHAT IS AFRICA’S PROBLEM” that was published in 2000 by the University of Minnesota Press. It is genuinely, warmly recommended for read.
Before going to present you with his thoughts let me give you a couple of numbers and share my sentiments.
So, when Mr. Museveni took office of the President of Uganda in 1986, the life expectancy was 48 years! He made the following statement in 1989 State of the Nation: “Currently, Africa is one of the most backward continents in the whole world.” He defined backwardness as the absence of a reasonable degree of development continuing with explaining the concept of development as “man’s ability to tame his environment and utilize it’s natural law for his own benefit.” He explained using the word reasonable because the man’s mastery of the nature, even for the advanced countries, is still only relative. Today, in 2023 life expectancy is 64 years.
Also Uganda GDP in 2017 was just a little less then 26bn $ and it raised to all time high to 45,46 bn $.
In order for this to be achieved many things have to be done and the right people needed to occupy the important places in the government, to give the necessary freedom to entrepreneurs to develop. Another important thing is that the absolute respect to the private property is guaranteed, enabling many foreign companies to establish themselves in Uganda.
He made some extremely important points that are always current for many leaders that want to successfully govern their countries! Very important and one of the crucial points was the fight against corruption and self example!
Enjoy his following thoughts!
“How can we hope to convince anyone of the Tightness of our cause if our own people are violating our own stated goals, thereby undermining our political, economic, and social programs? Corruption is a cancer that, if it is not checked, will hinder progress in all sectors of society. Instead of officials carrying out work
on public projects, they are busy looking for avenues through which they can divert funds and materials for their own private use.”
To continue with:
Having said that, however, I do not feel despondent about this problem because I know that it is just a matter of time before we shall have perfected our means of defining and detecting corruption. The weighing scale that will help us define corruption is the Leadership Code, which will be brought before the Council during this session. Once the Code becomes law it will be easier to categorize corrupt practices. The next battle in the war against corruption will be its detection. There are already a number of government agencies that ought to be doing such work—the Inspectorate of Government, the various security organiza-
tions, the Auditor General’s office, and the Public Accounts Committee.
The major task in combatting corruption, therefore, is to ensure that these institutions are manned by incorruptible people. It seems, however, that corrupt elements have infiltrated one or two of these departments and it is my intention to ensure that these subversives are up-rooted. I am, therefore, confident that ultimately, the battle against corruption will be won.”
Essentially, President Yoweri Museveni gave the practical way to all who really want to fight corruption how to do it! This is not only about Uganda and Africa but about the corruption in the whole world! By fighting corruption on the Earth level the prosperity of all of us, the citizens, will raise, our life expectancy will increase and our productivity will never stop! Huge salute towards President of Uganda Mr. Yoweri Museveni for sharing his ideas with those who want to read and want to make the difference in their place of living!
Talking about Democracy President Museveni acknowledge some truths that are not widely known for the public in many so-called democracies. He stated:
Democracy
“Point number one of our Ten-Point Program is the restoration of democracy. The Greeks are reputed to have initiated a form of government where the people were directly involved in the making of decisions concerning the running of their daily lives. In the Greek city-states, where this form of government was first tried, neither the slaves nor the women took part in decision making. They were excluded from the political process and yet they formed the majority of the population in the city-states. The importance of the concept, however, is that the
people should be involved in their governance and the National Resistance Movement subscribes to this principle: this is the substance of democracy…. In all democratic and civilized societies, constitutions are the anchors of people’s rights. The people must, therefore, be afforded an opportunity to make the constitution themselves.”
That opportunity which is now, unfortunately, being deprived for many citizens in the western hemisphere, that was propagating it for so long!
The way for any country to prosper is to take all the necessary steps for SELF RELIANCE. To do that basic policies are important to be established and strictly followed! In his speech of 1988 he stated:
But in Uganda, we still need a movement because a movement is multi-ideological. In our movement, you will find feudalists, capitalists, and socialists, but we insist that one line of thought must lead all those tendencies. If you are a feudalist, a capitalist, or a socialist, you must, at least, accept that you are a nationalist. Even if you have feudalist tendencies, you must subject them to our nationalist aspirations. We are insisting on a minimum position below which you are not allowed to go: you are not allowed to be an imperialist agent, for instance—we cannot allow that. We have outlawed only one group of people we cannot work with: they are called comparador capitalists. These are not capitalists in their own right. They are not what one might call national capitalists. National capitalists are capitalists whose economic activities contribute to the independence of the country. The second type of person we do not like is the speculator who, by the nature of his business, does not contribute to production. He buys one item and sells it for twenty times more than the original price so
that by the time it reaches the consumer, its price is astronomical. We regard this man as a negative force.”
Mr. Museveni enlightens us all and definitely his experience and wisdom can be used by many young leaders in the continent of Africa, and definitely not only!
That brings us to the reaction of some African states who decided to take out their colonizers for good and start fighting corruption in the highest places!
Here you can see the recent events in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea and just recently Niger.
About that you can see our previous post in the category of “Africa.”
Africa, combined by the wisdom of old and zeal and patriotism of the new generation definitely has bright future!
To be continued…
