Write about a time when you didn’t take action but wish you had. What would you do differently?
Some years ago, when I was at Toastmasters, we got an interesting question for our “table topics.”
The question was:
Where do you see yourself in one year time?
I was not called to give a reply, but the question stayed with me a long time. I remember gathering my three children before the start of the new school year( they have 2 years of difference between them) asking them as a surprise to take a piece of paper and write what are they planing to achieve in the new school year.
They looked at me, surprised, and I told them that whatever they wrote would be for their eyes only. The idea, I continued, is not for me to check you. The idea is for that letter to yourself be read after school year finishes and see what did you do, what you did not, what extra you achieved, what you did not, and from there to make plans for the next year. You, I told them, will see how your vocabulary improved and how your way of thinking deepened. And that letter will stay with you as long as you want and can be shown to your children. To make it even more interesting, I showed them my short writings from the fourth grade of my primary school, where I criticised one of my friends’ behaviours! They were astonished when I told them that he became one of the best light specialists working in many theatres and organising as many famous concerts around the world…
So, they wrote their letter and I provided them with the nice envelopes, told them to seal it and open it at the end of the year!
I never asked them how or what they achieved, but if I judge from their lives up to now, they definitely got something out of it!
What I was disappointed about is that I did not do it myself! I should take action together with my children and write the letter to myself. Store it for some years and then open it to find out what I was thinking then, and how I react now, and many other things…
Well, to heal the disappointment I decided to offer to my readers following option!
Here is what is all about:
Would you write to your future self or someone else in the future? Would you give advice, leave a reminder of the present moment, or describe the future as you imagine it and check where life will take you?
